In the second half of 2024, 'multi-legged walking robots for counterterrorism operations' and 'large-scale multi-purpose reconnaissance drones' will be piloted in the military.
To this end, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) signed its first rapid R&D project agreement with Hyundai Rotem and PRENEU on the 10th.
The rapid R&D project is a project that quickly researches and develops weapons systems with new technologies within two years in line with the pace of technological development of the 4th industrial revolution and links them with the needs through military pilot operations.
It is expected to dramatically shorten the period of introduction of advanced weapons and accelerate the development of defense research and development (R&D) in connection with Defense Innovation 4.0.
Multi-legged walking robots for counterterrorism operations play a role in identifying and responding to enemy threats early during counterterrorism operations, contributing to minimizing casualties and improving combat power. Hyundai Rotem will be in charge of carrying out the project, with a budget of 4.6 billion won.
The large-scale multi-purpose reconnaissance drone project with a budget of 4.3 billion won is expected to develop drones that will carry out various tasks such as surveillance and reconnaissance, supporting the three-dimensional operation of tactical units and contributing to the localization of drones in the defense sector.
The Defense Industry Technology Support Center affiliated with the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), an agency dedicated to rapid research and development projects, will select experts for each project as project managers (PMs) to support successful development and military use.
Eom Dong-hwan, head of the agency, said, "In the future, the agency will continue to do its best to make our military leap forward as a high-tech science and technology strong force in line with Defense Innovation 4.0.
